Over the Edge by Mary Connealy

Over the Edge by Mary Connealy, is the latest book about the Kincaid brothers. With both of his brothers married, Seth Kincaid is working on building a cabin and staking a claim, but he has a nagging thought in the back of his mind that he has forgotten something important. Turns out that while Seth was recovering after his injuries from the war, he got married. Then in a fit from a fever, left her and journeyed home without remembering that he had a wife. Now his wife is out to find him and when she does, she only has one thought on her mind, to kill him. After she finds him, she refuses to let him out of her sight until she feels she can trust him again. With the amount of distrust and hurt she feels towards him, Seth may never get his family back together.

I found this book to be on par with the other books in the series. I had been waiting to find out the end of Seth’s story since reading the first book in the series and I found it to be worth the wait. Seth had been a character in the first two books that you weren’t quite sure about. He was crazy and that shone through, but you could feel that there was something under the surface that just needed a little coaxing to come out. This book delved deeper into the character of Seth and it was interesting seeing how Seth was healing throughout this book. I was definitely pleased with how the author chose to advance his character and finish the story. It is well worth the read and I would definitely recommend this entire series.

Twice a Bride by Mona Hodgson

Twice a Bride by Mona Hodgson tells the story of the young widow, Willow Peterson, who has just relocated to Cripple Creek after a troubling few years after the death of her husband.  She has dreams of earning her living as a painter, but in the meantime has accepted a job as a sales associate at her sister-in-law’s, Ida Sinclair Raines, ice box store. When Trenton Van Deer sets up shop as a photographer in Cripple Creek, he advertises for a portrait painter and gets more than he bargains for when he hires Willow. Neither are looking for love, but love never seems to be far away in Cripple Creek.

I found this book to be more simplistic than the author’s other books. It just didn’t seem to be as believable as her other love stories. The plot just moved too fast. They met, sparks flew, and then there was the set back, and then the nice neat conclusion and every one ended up happy. I do like most of Mona Hodgson’s work, but this one seemed a little too fairy tale for me to really enjoy it. I do think that it was well written and that if the story had more depth to it, it would have been a great read. If you are looking for a light, happy read, this is an excellent choice.

Be Still My Soul by Joanne Bischof

Gideon O’Riley is a man who is used to having girls fall at his feet, but when he steals a kiss from Lonnie Sawyer, her father forces them into a marriage that neither of them wants. Gideon did not want a wife and is not willing to take on the responsibilities that a wife brings.
Lonnie is used to not being loved, as her father has been abusive her entire life. She had hoped to escape her abusive life when she turned 18, but with the forced wedding, she gives up hope of ever being loved. She relies on her faith in God to help her deal with her new life. Can her groom ever find faith in her God and learn to love her?
For this being the first book that Joanne Bischof has written, I was really impressed. I was so engrossed in this book that I couldn't put it down. I read it in two days just because I received the book after I got home from work and I had to go to sleep some time so I could go to work the next day. It was really difficult reading how Gideon treated Lonnie in the beginning. The story really focuses on Gideon growing, both spiritually and mentally, and Lonnie's faith and steadfastness in God.
In the beginning of the story, Gideon has no thoughts for anyone but himself. He didn't want a wife and now that he is stuck with one, he blames her for everything that goes wrong in his life. As the story moves along, he is slowly but surely learning what it means to be a husband and that he has greatly fallen short. He learns that he must seek God and change himself before he loses Lonnie.
Lonnie finds that married life isn't much better than the life she spent with her abusive father. She had hoped that she would find love with Gideon over time, but soon finds that Gideon's only love is himself. She copes just like she has always coped, looking to God for guidance and just accepting her fate. As they grow closer, she finds that she is starting to fall in love with her husband, but she is scared to give her heart to a man who doesn't love her.
I enjoyed this book very much. I would definitely recommend it to all my friends. It does have some difficult content dealing with death of children, but other than that, it was a great read.

The Widow of Saunder's Creek by Tracey Bateman

The Widow of Saunders Creek by Tracey Bateman is the story of Corrie Saunders, a woman recently widowed when her husband, Jarrod, died a hero’s death in Iraq. When Corrie moves to her late husband’s ancestral home, she thinks she can sense his spirit in the house. Jarrod’s cousin, Eli, who is helping Corrie fix up the house, has strong beliefs against ghosts and spirits and he believes that it is not Jarrod who is returning to the house, but a dark spirit that has lived there for years. As Corrie tries to make sense of what is happening in the house and her life, she leans on Eli, who, in turn, is trying to get her to rely more on the God he serves.

I found this book quite surprising. It was much deeper than I thought it would be. It brought up a lot of questions about spirituality and if ghosts and spirits exist. It delved deep into showing how someone dealing with grief would try almost anything to connect with the person they lost.  Corrie is grieving so much and is so lost that she goes against a part of her upbringing just to see if there was a chance that Jarrod had returned to her. At first, you don’t know what the author’s viewpoint on ghosts is, but towards the end, the author’s opinions become clear.  She allows the reader to come up with their own opinions before she makes hers known. The book can be slightly unsettling since it does have scenes of a spirit moving around the house and causing doors to slam shut, and objects to fall over. Overall, the author does a great job with creating a romance story while adding a little bit of intrigue.

Garden of Madness by Tracy Higley

Garden of Madness, by Tracy Higley, is a historical fiction novel set in Babylon during the days of King Nebuchadnezzar. It takes place during the king’s seven years of madness and tells the story of his daughter Tiamat. It begins when Tiamat is about to be married to Shealtiel, the son of the captured king of Judea and then skips ahead seven years to when Shealtiel died and Tia is caught in the middle of her plans, her mother’s plans for her, and the plans of an evil man to take over the kingdom. Tia must learn to trust in God and surrender her control in order to save her father and his kingdom.
I found this to be a very interesting book. I haven’t read that much about King Nebuchadnezzar and this was a different point of view than I had previously read. I had known that King Nebuchadnezzar went mad for seven years, but I had never thought about how his kingdom fared during that time. This book offered an interesting, albeit, fictional, look at what might have transpired during those seven years. I was fascinated by the politics and undercurrents of the court. Tia started out being a very naïve princess who thought that she had power and control, to finding out that she was just a pawn and was expected to surrender to her fate like a good princess. She was trying desperately to control her own life and control everything around her, thinking only she was able to change her fate.  As she grew in maturity, and in her understanding and faith in God, she started to realize that she wasn’t in control and that she never could be. She needed to trust in God and surrender all her plans for the plans that He had for her. I would definitely recommend this book. It was an excellent read.

Angel Eyes by Shannon Dittemore

Angel Eyes by Shannon Dittemore, is about a girl named Brielle who has just returned home from school after experiencing a tragedy. Her best friend was killed and she considers it to be her fault, that she could have prevented it. When she goes back to school in her hometown, she meets a mysterious boy named Jake who opens her eyes to a world that she did not realize existed.
I thought that this was a very well-written book. I found the story line very intriguing and it definitely kept my interest. I always like to read books that are about how angels and demons actually exist and are locked in a spiritual battle. I thought that this book had a very interesting take on spiritual warfare. ***spoiler alert***The one thing that I didn’t really like about the book was that the author didn’t seem to make a big deal about Ali being a unwed, pregnant teenager. It almost seemed accepting about it since she and Marco were planning on getting married. I know that Ali was not a Christian and that is probably why it wasn’t made more of, but when Brielle talked about seeing her in heaven one day, Jake said that was between her and God and left it at that. For a book geared toward teenagers, I would have liked to have seen more said about it and how it wasn’t right.
Overall, though, I thought this was a great book and I can’t wait to read the next one.

The Bride Wore Blue by Mona Hodgson

Vivian Sinclair, the youngest of the Sinclair sisters, has finally joined her three older sisters in Cripple Creek, Colorado. She hopes that her sisters will see her as a grown, independent woman and not just as the baby of the family, but she has no confidence in herself since she made an irreversible mistake back in Maine. She now sees herself as having to make her way in the world without the benefit of a husband in the future. When every job that she applies for falls through, she feels like she has no choice but to accept a job as a hostess in a sporting house. As her life continues to spiral out of control, she learns that she should no longer rely just on herself, but put her life in God's hands.
I really enjoyed this book. I have not been able to read the second book in The Sinclair Sisters of Cripple Creek series, but I did read the first one and this book was just as good as that one was. I thought that the character of Vivian Sinclair was very well written. She had a lot of depth to her struggles and she seemed more relatable than many other characters I have read. She made a mistake and felt that because of this mistake, she could never have the life she had dreamed about. She was no longer worthy to even be on the same level as her sisters. She felt like a hypocrite and that God would never forgive her for what she had done. The author did an excellent job with showing that no matter what someone does, God is always willing to forgive and you can move past your mistakes. I also really like how the author integrated an adoption story in the book. Adoption is something that is close to my heart and I really enjoyed reading about one in a fictional story. Overall, this was a great story and I am looking forward to the next book by Mona Hodgson to read more about the Sinclair sisters.

Chasing the Sun by Tracie Peterson

Hannah Dandrige was a tough girl. When her stepmother died in childbirth, in his grief, her father moved her, along with her little brother and her baby sister from Virginia to Texas. Hannah was in charge of bringing up her younger siblings and taking care of the house. When her father received a letter saying that his mother was dying, he decided to travel back to Virginia to see her. While her father is gone, Mr. Lockhart, her father’s business partner, tries to persuade Hannah into a marriage of convenience. Further trouble occurs when William Barnett returns to his family ranch to find that it has been given to Hannah’s family. He and his family had been considered traitors when they decided to fight for the Union. Complications abound and both William and Hannah have to learn to rely on God to show them the way.
I thought this was a pretty good book. I thought that the ending seemed a little abrupt, but as this is the first book in a series, and I don’t know what the other books will be about, more of the storyline may be brought out in the other books. The character of Hannah was very well-developed and my favorite character in the book. I loved how she would follow the Lord’s promptings even if it meant going against the norm or making her look foolish. She also stood up for herself and didn’t cave under the pressure that she was being put under. Overall, I was very pleased with this book and would definitely recommend reading it.

He thinks he is seeing his wife as a much younger version of herself in a young magician whose name is Eloise.
Mandy in 19, in 1970 on the fairgrounds with her friends. She buys lunch and sits under a tree and suddenly everything changes. She is in a hospital gown and the people around her are different. She is picked up by the police and taken to a mental hospital to be evaluated where she finds out that the year is 2010 and there are no records on her identity. She has a vision that changes her environment and she escapes the hospital. She is found by a family who take in troubled girls and tries to make her way using the only gifts she has, magic, going under her middle name, Eloise. When Dane meets Eloise, he takes her on as a protege and together they embark on the greatest journey of their lives.

Although I did really enjoy the book and the story line was good, it just didn't seem to have the gripping quality that other Frank Peretti books seemed to have. There didn't seem to have the spiritual elements that his other books have had. It was a great story and it was gripping towards the end, but it didn't hold my attention like other books. That said, it was a great story. It was a novel against the scientific advancements that deal with manipulating life and death. It really made you think about science and the ethics involved with all the new headway they have been making. It makes you ask the question, how far is too far? Are the scientific advancements we are making worth the risks? The story line did a great job of laying out the problems without forcing them on you. The book had a definite opinion on the subject, but it let you make your own conclusions.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone. It was another great novel by Frank Peretti.

Brush of Angel's Wings

Brush of Angel's Wings by Ruth Reid, is about an Amish girl and a Englisher man whom God brought together through extraordinary circumstances. Rachel has waited years for a man to pick her. For someone to ask to escort her home from a singing or to show any interested in her at all. At twenty, she is no longer considered the prime age for courting. She decided that she was probably more suited to be a teacher than a wife.
Jordan just returned to the Amish community that his mother left when she chose to marry his father. He wanted to fulfill his promise to his mother while she was dying that he would go back to the Amish community and try it out for a little while. All he wanted to do was to do his duty and then leave and become a truck driver. He had absolutely no intention to remain in the Amish community and had no intention to fall in love. With the help of the angel Nathaniel, both Rachel and Jordan learn God's true plan for their lives.

I really enjoyed this book. This was my second delve into Amish fiction and I was very pleased with the book. It was different from the other Amish book I read and from other books that I have read about. I really enjoyed how the book added aspects of spiritual warfare by telling the angel's and the demon's side of the story. It had a Frank Peretti kind of  feel to it. It was not a thriller, it was definitely a romance, but it had another aspect to it that other romance novels do not have. It seemed to have more depth to it. It wasn't just a romantic story with God working out the details from afar, it made it so that God was a direct part of the story. It was showing how if we trust God to write our love story, He actually takes an interest and will guide us in His path. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wanted more than just the traditional love story.

Adoption

Adoption is something that I have grown up considering. My parents once thought about adopting and even though they ended up not, it instilled the idea in me. Since my husband and I have been unable to conceive so far, it has been creeping further and further to the forefront of my thoughts. I would really like to do embryo adoption someday. I really want the experience of being pregnant at least once, and I love the idea of saving a little baby that wouldn't have a chance for life otherwise. We are also considering special needs adoption. It is not something that I would have considered before I found Reece's Rainbow. After I saw this site and saw the plight of these poor children, I can't get them out of my head. I have five of their pictures on my prayer list and I have my list up at work behind my computer, on the fridge, and right beside my bed so that I can see their pictures throughout the day and remember to pray for them. We are not able to adopt any of these children right now due to our finances and the fact that we are 23 and most countries require one parent to be at least 25 years old. All I can do right now is pray. Pray for these children and that God shows what His plan is for our lives.

Not This Time be Vicki Hinze

Not This Time is a book about the small community of Seagrove Village and the horrors that happened there because of NINA (Nihilists in Anarchy). The community is rocked when there is an attack at a wedding and a prized member of the community is killed. Beth and Sara are best friends who built a company after they finished college. When Sara married a man who Beth considered just after her money, she thought that was the worst that she would have to see Sara through, but she was wrong. When Sara's husband turns up kidnapped, Beth tries to be strong for Sara and try to help her through it, but Sara's reaction isn't what she expected. As Beth tries to reason through the unbelievable circumstances and her new found attraction for a man that she doesn't want to love, she finds out more about herself and her faith in God. Through many twists and turns, corruption, deceit, and treacherous acts, the community tries to rally and find the truth.
I really enjoyed this book, even though I didn't really expect to. When I received the book I didn't realize that this was the third book in a series, so I was a little out of the loop about the back stories of the characters, but once I got into the book, I was able to follow along without any trouble. I found the characters very easy to relate to. I do wish that I had read the other two books first just because it would have made it easier to understand the characters and their motivations. Overall, this book delivers everything it promises. It has suspense, intrigue, terrorists, love, and redemption.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Blogging for Books for the purpose of writing a fair and honest review.  I received no other compensation.

Reece's Rainbow

I have been currently reading several adoption blogs. I hope to adopt someday and I am considering adopting a child with special needs. Through these blogs I have found the website Reece's Rainbow. This is a website that lists special needs children and has places for people to donate towards the adoption of these children. The pictures are heartbreaking. These children were abandoned at the hospital right after they were born for the only reason that they were not "perfect" according to the world's standards. I have printed out two of these pictures and am praying everyday for these children since I am not in a position to adopt any right now. I am going to try to donate money to some children's accounts every month. I would urge everyone to take a look at those pictures and consider either adopting one of those children. If you are not able to adopt I would urge you to consider donating to their accounts and praying for some of these children. Many of these children have never experienced love and what it is to be wanted. Maybe with your help we could change the futures of these children.

In Too Deep by Mary Connealy

A marriage of convenience to Ethan Kincaid seems to be the only option Audra Gilliland has after her husband dies leaving her with two small children to look after. She does not want to be a burden to her step-daughter, Julia, who is only recently married herself to Rafe Kincaid, Ethan's brother. She has been looked after all her life by men, with very disappointing results. She wants to show her new husband that she can stand on her own and that she doesn't need someone to care for her. Ethan Kincaid agreed to the marriage because it seemed to be the only option. He kept away from people as a general rule and tried not to feel anything too deeply. He plans to hold his new wife at arms length and not to get his emotions involved. He tries to protect her and keep her safe, but as he does he starts noticing that he is starting to care deeply for her and it terrifies him.
This book is the second book of the trilogy, The Kincaid Brides by Mary Connealy. The first book is Out of Control and is about the oldest brother Rafe Kincaid. In Too Deep is the story of Ethan Kincaid and his journey to finding love and really finding himself. This book can be read alone, but it is a good idea to read the first book if you want to really understand the back story. In each book there is the main story line about one of the brothers and side story line of intrigue that goes through all three books.
I really enjoyed this book. I thought that the story line was very good and I was very captivated by it. It was slightly predictable, but of course, so are mostly all romance novels. I kind of feel the story was more about Audra than Ethan. That might have been because I really connected to her character though. You really wanted Audra to stand up for herself and for her to know that she was strong and that all she had to go through in her life was just bringing her to this spot, where she could finally find happiness. Ethan's story line didn't captivate me as much. He was a good character in the story, but he wasn't my favorite character. He viewed himself as a coward and tried to do anything to prove that he wasn't. I thought that he was a little stuck on the past and sometimes it bugged me that he couldn't get over it, but that was his character in the story.
The ending was pretty good. It left a lot of loose ends that will be completed in the third novel. I can't wait to see how the story of the Kincaid brothers ends. I will definitely be reading the third book about Seth Kincaid, the third and youngest Kincaid brother, when it is published. I can't wait!!!

Giveaways

Ok, I know I said that I was going to try to write everyday...but of course, that is not how things workout. I have just discovered blog giveaways. I know, probably something I should have been aware of a long time ago, but unless I stumble across something or I am told about it, I normally do not think of these things on my own. Since then I have been scouring the Internet to find blogs that are doing book giveaways. I love reading and am always trying to find ways to read books for free since I have a very limited budget for books. My husband groans every time that I tell him I bought another book. Not necessarily because of money issues, but primarily because of space issues. I am currently two deep on my bookshelf and there really isn't much room for more. Oh, well. If there's a will, there's a way.
I may do a blog giveaway sometime. I do have two copies of one book that I would like to share with someone else, but we will see. :)

Westerns

I normally do not like Western books, but I love Zane Grey novels. I am currently reading The Wilderness Trek, my second favorite Zane Grey book. It is about two American cowboys who had to leave America and go to Australia. They hired on with a local cattle baron and started a trek of three thousand miles with eight thousand cattle across the never-never. A trek that they estimated would take them two years. There are many hardships along the road that they have to face including, shortage of water, cattle stampedes, aborigines, treachery, and murder. It is amazing to read about Australia from this author's perspective. Australia is one of the places that I really want to visit someday.

The Wedding Dress by Rachel Hauck

One dress, four women. The Wedding Dress by Rachel Hauck is the story of how one wedding dress touched four different women's lives. It gave them the courage to do what was right, it was uplifting in a time of need, it was comforting in a time of grief, and it gave a future. The book follows the lives of two women very closely. Charlotte, a young engaged woman who owns her own wedding dress shop where she prides herself with finding the perfect unique dress for each bride.  She bought a trunk at an auction and when she opened it she found a pristine wedding dress inside that was around 100 years old. Emily, the bride who the dress was originally designed and made for. She lived in 1912 where she was expected to marry the man her father picked for her because his family had the best social standing in town.

I really enjoyed this book. I wasn't sure at first that I would like it since I normally don't like modern day romances, but since half the book took place in 1912, it was a good mix of modern and old-fashioned. I thought the story was very well-written. Rachel Hauck did a great job of switching back and forth between the two main stories with the other two stories intertwined. I thought that the concept of the story was great. The fact that one dress could touch and change four different women through time was a great idea.  The characters were very real. They weren't perfect. They had moments of weakness and strength that we could all relate to.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants a heart warming story to brighten up their day.

Hearts Awakening

So, yesterday, I read yet another book. My total of books read this week is 5 1/2. Best week I've had in a while. I bought an ebook off of christianbookstore.com and stayed up really late reading it. The book was Hearts Awakening by Delia Parr. It was a book that I had been keeping my eye on, but didn't want to spend too much money on, so when I found it for pretty cheap, I went ahead and bought it. I really liked the book. It was my typical Christian historical romance that I usually read. It was about a single, 31 year old woman, who in that day was a spinster. She agreed to a marriage of convenience in name only, to a man who had two little boys and needed someone to take care of them. She wanted to escape her cousin who had taken her in after her parents died and who viewed her as a burden that was forced on him. Both she and him had many issues to overcome as they learned to live together. Both their relationships with each other and with God are challenged. I thought that it was a very well written book. It did have a very predictable twist near the end, but I find as a whole that most of the books in the historical romance genre are pretty predictable. This book was a tear jerker, but that may have just been me. I tend to cry a lot during books and movies and any sad things in them tend to draw out tears. This is a book that I would really recommend to someone who likes a story of strength and overcoming difficult pasts, with some romance sprinkled in, along with two adorable little boys who really steal the whole book :)

The Hunger Games

This week I read The Hunger Games. I read all three in 48 hours over the span of three days. Don't ask me why, but I take great pride in how fast I can read books. After reading the books, I am really excited to see the movie, I just hope it is as good as the book.
I really enjoyed this series. I like trilogies so it was no surprise that I would like this series. I did wait a while before I read them, though. I normally do not like reading books when they are popular, but my friend had them on her Kindle and since they were such easy access, I decided that I probably should read them. I thought it was an excellent trilogy and very well written. There were times when I was frustrated because of how dense Katniss could be, but that was her character so I just accepted it. These were books that I will probably read again. If you like futuristic fantasy books, these would be a great choice.

Really good video

I was on Facebook today and one of my friends posted a video from Youtube entitled Sex has a price tag. This is an excellent video and I would recommend that everyone watch this. The speaker makes excellent points even if you are not a Christian. I fully believe in no sex before marriage and both my husband and I were virgins when we got married. We even saved our first kiss for the altar. This is an wonderful video to show all teenagers and those who think that having sex before marriage is not harmful and just for fun.

Random Thoughts...

I am going to try to write something everyday, doesn't have to be much, just some of my random thoughts.
So, today I finished reading Just David by Eleanor H. Porter, for about the tenth time. I adore this book. It is one of my favorite books of all time and I try to read it about once a year. If you are looking for a good, wholesome, sweet book to read that won't take much of your time, this would be an excellent choice. It is about a little boy named David living in a mountain home with his father. He lived for his violin and played heavenly. His father became ill and they had to leave their mountain home. The book follows the journey of David as he learned to adjust to a world so different from the one that he was used to and how he touched so many lives with his spirit, his view on life, and mostly, his violin.

Heart of Gold by Robin Lee Hatcher

“Heart of Gold” by Robin Lee Hatcher is about a Southern preacher and his daughter relocating to Idaho during the Civil War. It follows the girl through her struggles with being in the north and her feelings about the war to finding love in the place that she least thought possible.
I found the book kind of short. It may have been because I read it on the computer, but the story seemed to be very short.  The story line was very predictable. Girl and boy meet, they don’t like each other, something brings them together, they fall in love, something else pushes them apart, and then they get together at the end. It didn’t seem like it had a lot of depth to it. Shannon fell in love with Matthew awfully fast and it seemed to have more to do with attraction than actual love. She really only mentions once about how he was a great Christian man and that is one of the reasons she loved him. They didn’t seem to really talk and connect that way. It seemed slightly superficial to me.  It was a fun, enjoyable read, but it wasn’t a book that I would probably read again.
